SHENANDOAH VALLEY WINE TRAIL

With more than 200 vineyards and wineries scattered throughout the Valley, it may come as no surprise that Virginia ranks 5th in the nation for wine production. Check out some of our favorites along the the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail.

Of course, Virginia is steeped in Civil War history. Thanks to many preservation societies keeping historic sites alive and re-telling the stories of battles and locations past, we have tremendous resources available for understanding this part of our nation’s past.

SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK

Shenandoah National Park is nearby and boasts one of the top scenic drives in the nation. You can step foot on the Appalachian Trail, hike down to a refreshing waterfall, soak in some history, and maybe even come face-to-face with a deer, bear, turkey, or other woodland creature.

VIRGINIA’S CAVERNS

Caverns are the perfect adventure on a hot day. With temperatures hovering around 56 degrees regardless of the season, it’s an easy way to experience nature’s wonders even when inclement weather strikes. There are eight caverns scattered throughout the state – these listed are all located within an hour’s drive.

  • Luray Caverns — the “Stalacpipe Organ” is a truly unique spectacle! Your ticket also gets you into the museums on the property, which are definitely worth visiting. Note: the tour takes you on a decent walk, and the stairs down into the caverns might limit those with mobility issues. (40 min N up Rte 81)
  • Shenandoah Caverns — The only cavern with elevator service. (30 min N on Rte 81)
  • Endless Caverns — Called “endless” because no end has been found to this vast network of cave systems, you’ll also discover a fossilized mammoth tooth. (25 min N on Rte 81)
  • Grand Caverns — Here you’ll see a formation called “Stonewall Jackson’s Horse”! Hiking, mini golf, swimming, and more are also on-site. (25 min south off Rte 33)

MUSEUMS

The Shenandoah Valley has a rich history of agriculture, art, battle, and development. Get a glimpse inside the things that make this place special with a visit to one of our nearby museums — guaranteed to open your eyes to a fascinating new facet of this place’s culture, past and present.

  • The Virginia Quilt Museum — Located just downtown, and an eye-opening experience to the world of quilts. You needn’t be a quilt lover to appreciate the art and craft of this fine part of Virginia heritage.
  • The Frontier Culture Museum — Drive out in Staunton (28 min N on 81) and make a day of it! After visiting the museum, follow the signs to the Historic Downtown, find a shady parking place, and stroll around as you discover shops, restaurants, and antiquing.
  • The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley — Walk through a magnificent mansion that also boasts six acres of gardens and impressive museum galleries. Take tea in the cafe, and don’t miss the Miniatures Gallery – exactly furnished houses and rooms on a petite scale. (1 hr 10 min N on Rte 81)

Want live stage concerts, plays? You’ll find many stellar productions offered here — many right downtown.

  • Court Square Theater
  • The Forbes Center at JMU
  • Oak Grove Theater — A community theater group that performs in an outdoor theater amidst oak trees. (25 min N up Rte 81)
  • The American Shakespeare Center — Also known as BlackFriar’s Playhouse, this in-the-round theater puts on near-nightly performances of some of Shakespeare’s bests. (30 min S down Rte 81)
  • Hull’s Drive-in — Looking for a good, old-time romantic evening? Clean out your car, pack some snacks, and head down to Lexington for a double feature on the big BIG screen! (50 min S down Rte 81 to 64)

If local arts and crafts are more your thing, we’ve got you covered there, too, with seasonal and year-round exhibits and markets to be discovered all throughout the Valley, with some great finds just down the road.
